If you have an iPhone, check out the Creative Whack Pack application from Roger von Oech. He is the author of a well known book, A Whack On the Side of the Head.
The iPhone app has much of the same content but the delivery is cooler. Each day you receive a “Whack of the Day” designed to help you think creatively and overcome problems.
For example, today’s whack tells you to “Listen to Your Dreams” and then describes how dreams have been creatively used in the arts, business and science. Two of the examples given are Robert Louis Stevenson’s use of dreams in plotting Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Paul McCartney dreaming the melody for Yesterday. Von Oech’s then gives you suggestions on how you can approach your own dreams.
There are 64 Whacks in all and every one I’ve opened has been, if not actually useful, interesting. The application costs $2.99. If you don’t have an iPhone, the book A Whack On the Side of the Head is worthwhile and available on Amazon.com. Or get a “whack of the day” from von Oech’s blog.
