Using Your Super Power

26 02 2010

We typically come into contact with dozens of people every day – at social events, at the grocery store, at local meetings, etc. When you introduce yourself, do you tell potential clients you’re a Realtor®? Do you say anything that differentiates you from the other agents in the marketplace?

In his blog, marketing guru Seth Godin uses the analogy of Super Heroes and their superpowers to illustrate how to succinctly promote our special skill.

Plastic Man’s super power is that he has all the properties of rubber and he uses that power to help people. If you don’t know about Plastic Man’s superpower, he just comes across as one weird looking dude. Of course, your superpower is probably more mundane than Plastic Man’s, but it will still be of interest to the right people. Here’s an example from Godin’s blog:

“When you meet someone, you need to have a super power. If you don’t, you’re just another handshake. Don’t say, “Hi, I’m Don, I’m from Cleveland.” Instead, try, “Hi, I’m Don, I tell stories that spread.” It’s not about touting yourself or coming on too strong. It’s about making the introduction meaningful. If I don’t know your superpower, then I don’t know how you can help me (or I can help you).”

This won’t be appropriate in every social encounter obviously, but for networking events or large gatherings, including “Waterfront properties are my specialty” with your introduction may lead to interesting conversations and more business.

One of the best ways to generate traffic for your website and online listings is to advertise offline. Independent research shows that magazines are by far the best driver of real estate consumers compared to other advertising options. See the graph below:

Smart marketers know that it’s not print or the Internet—its print AND the Internet.

Not many people enjoy facing a blank page. Whether you’re posting a blog article, creating a marketing flyer or updating your website—writing can be challenging.

For many agents, writing captions for their advertised listings is frustrating. There are no doubt days when writing captions is the last thing you’re in the mood to do. Homes & Land is here to help.

The Homes & Land control panel has a Caption Writer that takes the information you’ve selected and turns it into a coherent paragraph. I think you’ll be impressed by the quality of copy that Caption Writer delivers. Use Caption Writer as a starting point (and then edit the copy it gives you) or as free writing pass on those days when words are not your friends.

This video shows you how to use the Homes & Land caption writer.

Happy Writing!

Once you’re logged into your Ad Essential control panel account, clicking the “Listing Flyers” link under the “My Listings” tab presents you with an overview of your listing inventory and a “Create Flyer” link for each of your listings.

Clicking the “Create Flyer” link opens the “Flyer Designer Wizard” where you first select your desired template layout by clicking on a thumbnail image for your desired template.

With your template now selected, you can easily place photographs from the listing into the flyer template by dragging and dropping them into place. You can even adjust the crop of the photo by clicking on the image box in the template and moving the crop outlines as desired.

Next, you can modify the listing data by clicking the “Edit Listing Data” button and entering the desired information. Clicking “Continue” returns you to the “Flyer Designer Wizard” where you are now ready to create your flyer by clicking the “Create Flyer” button.

What Can You Stop?

Time is our most precious resource, as business professor and acknowledged genius Peter Drucker liked to point out. Drucker believed that deciding which activities we can abandon is the key to growth, because abandonment frees up resources—especially time. Habit is a powerful part of our nature. We do things just because we’ve always done them. I’m as guilty as anyone.

What activities are you doing now that are no longer productive? I’m making my own list.
